There are many different Server Operating Systems available that can run sites that use the Internet Protocol. A list of 3 Server software solutions that have been known to be widely uses by organizations around the world are listed below:

Apache HTTP Server – Apache HTTP Server is a free software application that can run on both Windows and Linux platforms. It’s freely distributes by The Apache Software Foundation.

Windows Server – Microsoft has had releases of Server Operating Systems since Windows NT 4.0. However Internet Information Services has only been included since Windows 2000 Server. Internet Information Services enables Microsoft Windows Server editions to host websites.

Max OSX Server – Mac OSX Server released their first Operating Systems for Servers in 1999. Mac has 9 Server Operating Systems each varying in functionality and  abilities. The services that are ran on Mac OSX Server in order to host a website / intranet is Apache Web Server 2.2. Apple does not make their own HTTP Server they incorporate Apache.

Hardware Requirements of Apache HTTP Server:

  • x86 Capable CPU.
  • Host Operating System of Linux or Windows Server.
  • 13MBs of Free space.
  • Network Card.

Hardware Requirements of Mac OS X Lion (10.7):

  • x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo or later CPU).
  • At least 2GB of memory.
  • Mac OS X 10.6.6 with Mac App Store installed.
  • At least 4GB of disk space for downloading.
